I haven’t updated this blog in a while now because a. I was buried in projects and b. I finally left Germany for good and moved to London, which was quite a time (and money ) consuming undertaking.

Amongs the last projects I did in Germany were a product video for Harting to showcase their RFID-Suite haVis at their booth at the Hannover Messe in Germany, the frontend for a soon-to-go-live Drupal site and a Flash site – I’ll update the portfolio as soon as possible.

Now I’m looking for work here in London, but I guess after yesterdays football match Germans aren’t exactly welcome anymore … maybe I should move on and try my luck in Scotland

As I’ve just followed a discussion in the Flash Freelancer group over at LinkedIt.com about whether or not Flash is always the right solution for every job I thought I give a brief recommendation about which technology I’d use depending on what you need:

You need: Onlinegames, animation-heavy microsites, animated banners, Video, complex data visualisations etc. – use Flash. If the data has to be dynamic to a certain amount, combine it with either xml or php/mySql

You need: A website for your rather small company, with some information about who you are, what you do, how to contact you and an easy way to update a news-section from time to time – use WordPress.

You need: A website for your mid-sized company, which has everything the WordPress-Version has but goes a step further, like for example with download sections, a customer area, eCommerce etc – use Drupal.

You need: A huge website for your huge company – go ask a huge web agency

Of course there are a lot of other possibilities – pure Html-Sites, a plethora of other content mangement systems, Silverlight, Java and what not, but I just recommended the tools that I use myself here. So one of those solutions would be what you get if you hire me

For a while now Google is capable of indexing Flash-sites which led to a way better index ranking. I’m not entirely sure how the crawling works, however it seems that for texts it uses simple copy and paste: All flash-sites I designed where I set the textfields to selectable get indexed fully with text excerpts just like “normal” websites, whereas those where I had non-selectable textfields only get shown with minimal information.

This works with both static as well as dynamic texts from xml-files or databases.
